  • The city was greatly expanded and deepened in the Easter Roman era, when it was used for protection from Muslim Arab raids during the four centuries of Arab-Byzantine wars. The city was connected with Derinkuyu Underground City through miles of tunnels. These cities continued to be used by the Christian inhabitants as protection from the Mongolian incursions of Timur in the 14th Century.
  • Selime Monastery- Formerly known as Salamis. In these fairy chimneys lived Christians fleeing from Romans. When Christianity was accepted in Rome, churches and cathedrals were built here. The whole canyon is honeycombed with rock-cut underground dwellings and churches from the Bynzantine period built by the Cappadocian Greeks. The people were forced to leave the area and move to Greece in 1923 population exchange between Turkey and Greece.

Kaymakli Underground City holds great historical importance as it was first built by the Phrygians in the 8th-7th century BC and later expanded during the Eastern Roman era to protect against Arab raids. It was also connected to Derinkuyu Underground City via tunnels. The city was first opened to tourists in 1964.

Why is Selime Monastery considered unique, and what historical elements can be observed there?

Selime Monastery is unique due to its location within the volcanic chimneys of Hasan Mountain and its rich history. It served as a refuge for Christians fleeing the Romans and later became a site for churches and cathedrals after Christianity was accepted in Rome. The influence of the Ottoman era is evident through structures like the Sinan Bey Mosque. Its natural beauty, shaped by volcanic activity and erosion, adds to its uniqueness.

What makes Ihlara Valley a special destination for visitors, and what historical events shaped its history?

Ihlara Valley is special because of its 14-km-long canyon carved by the Melendiz River, which is lined with rock-cut underground dwellings and Byzantine-era churches. The valley's unique history includes its role as a settlement for Cappadocian Greeks during the Byzantine period. However, the 1923 population exchange between Turkey and Greece forced its inhabitants to relocate, leaving behind a rich cultural and historical legacy.
